Well, Twitter isn’t really new anymore and it’s been discussed to death in web circles. But I assume a lot of you still aren’t using it. Because you don’t want to, don’t need to or because you haven’t understood the benefits of it. If the latter is true, you might wanna look into it.
Inspired by copywriter and fellow tweeter Mattias Åkerberg – who wrote a short Twitter introduction the other day (in Swedish) – I thought I’d share a bit about why I like Twitter and what kind of people I follow. (I’m not going to explain Twitter though, so if you’re new to it you can read all about the so called micro-blog here)
I’ve had my Twitter account for a couple of years already, but I’ve only been active since a few months back. Honestly, because I didn’t realize until then what a great resource it actually is.
So what’s in it for me, you might ask. Well, Twitter has been described as room full of people, and you can choose exactly who’s there. And what you want to do in the room is all up to you: Listen to other people, join discussions, ask questions, tell stories (140 characters ones, but still), etcetera.
I think it’s especially useful workwise. For me as a wedding photographer it’s a perfect place to listen to, and participate in discussions with other people working with weddings or photography. Or both. And for me as a blogger, I get a lot of useful tips by following people working with websites and search engine optimization. And for me as a human being, following people who write hilarious stuff all the time – well, that’s just fun.
Additionally you can connect, collaborate and network with people who have the same interests as yourself. You can brand yourself and get more traffic to your website (by sharing your latest work for example). You can find out about interesting websites and get how-to tips. And so on - the possibilities are endless. Twitter is so much more than the Facebook update-your-status-every-15-minutes-phenomenon.
Here are a few of my favourite tweeters:
@feber (feber.se – swedish website)
@stanflan (wedding photographer)
@photojack (social media coach and photo consultant)
@jonaspeterson (wedding photographer)
@jasminestar (wedding photographer)
@allan_cole (photographer and writer)
@jamiedelaine (wedding photographer)
@ryanbrenizer (photographer)
@ulricagood (copywriter)
@leijon (editor-in-chief for a bunch of Swedish media magazines)
The whole list of who I follow is found here. And this is me: @jakobg
