Sources of Inspiration

I spent four years in business school trying to learn everything businessey. But apparently I didn’t, because these two books – The Brand Gap and Zag, by Marty Neumeier – really made me think. I guess it’s because Cole and I actually have our own business now, and it’s easier to relate to reality. But also because these books are really awesome.

They are short and easy to read, i.e. you aren’t bored with long studies (everyone who read Kotler’s marketing books for example know what I mean). And they are easy to relate to, with many great examples on both good and bad branding.

The books focus mainly on one thing. Zag. If everyone else Zigs, you should Zag. If you can’t say you’re the only one doing what you do, or the only one doing it in a particular way, you shouldn’t be doing it at all. Even though that may be simplifying things a bit too much, Neumeier really has a point.

I really recommend (Cole recommended them to me btw, thanks for that!) anyone involved with business, branding or marketing to check these books out. They’re eye-openers.

LaRi - I think you are for sure right about finding knowledge from well composed litterature. However, remember that your many years in university gave you the tools to open upp secrets often hidden in an author’s written sentenses. Keep up the good work!
