Reflections after my first months in Vancouver

A couple of months back I wrote a post about my reflections after the first couple of weeks in Vancouver. Well, now that I’ve lived here for about three months, I have a few more bullets to add to that list.

TWITTER – If you’re from back home (Sweden / Finland) you most likely think of Twitter as something you see or hear about every once in a while. You might even have an account, and post updates now and then. But that’s probably about it (if you’re like the normal friend of mine back home).

Well, here it’s different. Very different.

I wrote a post about Twitter in September 2009 (while still living in Stockholm). That was about the time I started to realize its potential. At least I thought I did. Now that I’ve been living in Vancouver for a while, I’ve learned a lot more about it – how to use it and what a great tool it is. Both for personal and professional use.

For example:

  • Most of the people I know here are I’ve met through Twitter (all very nice people too!)
  • 90 percent of the stuff in my apartment (furniture etc) comes from people I’ve met through Twitter. (I organized a ‘Bring Your Own Furniture Party’ via Twitter and people who I had never met in person actually furnished my apartment. How awesome is that.)
  • 75 percent of all the business we’ve done this far with Nordica comes from connections we’ve made through Twitter.
  • You could totally live without a TV and still know everything that’s going on – in real time – just by following the Twitter stream.

And so on. Social Media is just awesome here.

THE OLYMPICS – I could write a ten page essay about this huge party. But I won’t. It’s all been said already. Let’s just say that Vancouver and its people were fantastic hosts of the 2010 Olympics. It was all fun, fun, fun. The streets were filled with happy cheering people, and it was all just amazing. I have a feeling I’ll never experience anything like this again.

THE WEATHER – When I came here, I thought it’d be sorta cold. So I brought winter jackets and all that stuff. Haven’t used them once. Flowers, sunshine and 15 degrees in February, during the Summer Winter Olympics. Cherry blossoms and sunglasses. Love it.

That’s it for now. I’m sure I’ll have more bullets for the list later on. Everybody keeps telling me about how great the summers are here. Can’t wait.
