FAQ | My favourite lenses

I often get questions about what lenses I use and which lenses to use in which situations. The latter is hard to answer, since all photographers work in their own ways with their own favourite lenses. The first part is easier though, since I mostly use only two lenses:

The Nikon 50mm f/1,4 and the Nikon 85mm f/1,8.

Both of these are great for what I’m mostly shooting – people. Both of them are also great in low light situations if you – like me – strive to avoid the flash. The 50mm f/1,4 is especially good because of the low f-stop. (There is a 85mm f/1,4 as well. I’d love to get my hands on it).

These two are prime lenses, that is: no zoom. They are 50 and 85 mm and that’s it, which means you have to use your feet for zooming. This did bother me a bit when I first started using them since I was used to zooms, but as I saw the results and got used to moving around instead of zooming, I was sold. Will never go back. The pictures are that much better.

Another advantage with these two lenses is the size – they’re small. Put a zoom lens on your camera and it’s usually huge and heavy. With these prime lenses it’s not.

The 50mm f/1,4 is definitely my favourite lens right now. I could easily shoot a whole wedding with that lens alone. It’s around $500-600 (somewhere around 4000 SEK or 400 EUR) and is very much worth the money. There’s also a 50mm f/1,8 that’s less than half the price and also great for portraits and low light situations.

Additionally I have a Sigma 20mm f/1,8, a Nikon 70-300mm f/4,5-5,6, and a Tamron 90mm f/2,8 Macro. They are all good lenses for different purposes and I use them every once in a while, but for people photography the 50mm and the 85mm are my most frequently used ones.

Cole - 50mm wins! Love that little bugger….

Tyler Ingram - I like shooting with my 50. It forces me to think more about shots etc. Granted I only have the f1.8. Though typically my 70-200 f2.8L IS lens is on my camera.

I’ve heard SOOOO many great things about the 85mm f1.8 for both Nikon and Canon. I wish I had unlimited money to purchase more camera gear!

Cole - @Tyler: The 1,8 is a beauty too! I’ve been using a friends (*cough* Jakobs’ *cough cough*) 85mm the last month or so and it’s absolutely mint for portrait stuff. The sharpness is solid and it’s a durable son of a you know what. Great lens!

Stacy – Christchurch - thankyou for your imput.. I found it refreshing and informative

Cole - @Stacey: Just throwing this your way; What kind of lens do you use? Perhaps you could join the discussion! Cheers to you in NZ!

Matto - Just bought the Nikon 50mm f1.8 about a month ago and it’s great! As you said, the price is a small part of the 50mm f1.4 but still very usable in most situations.

I’m on my way to a Christmas dinner right now to see how it performs. We’re eating in a dark cellar, so it will really put it to the test ;)
